Dear Adrienne,
Thank you for your correspondence. This is obviously a very difficult issue and I understand the uproar over it, since there was a time in my life when I would have been as quick to denounce this thinking. I know that for me, my very identity and purpose in life was defined by the need to "save souls." As I share my response with you please keep in mind that we have taught the complete bible, end-to-end repeatedly at the Tzemach Institute and as a result have dealt with these issues. It is also very interesting to me that so many renowned leaders have publicly proclaimed their posture on this issue, fully knowing the controversy it would cause, yet so many people are quick to judge without considering the complete scriptural perspective. You may remember that in the mid 1970's Pat Robertson ran for president of the United States of America but never made it past early primaries and his political demise was over this very issue. Since then he has not even considered running for president because it would mean denouncing his belief system. It is clear that everyone needs Jesus. It is clear that without His blood we are all lost. It is clear that "all have fallen short of the glory of God." Yet, Jesus never preached the message of reconciliation. Paul never preached reconciliation to Jews. One man came to Jesus and asked what he must do to inherit life and Jesus answered him according to his shortcomings [by the way, His first response was "You know the law, obey it" (this would also be called heresy in the church today)]. The mission of the first century church [which should still be the church's message] was to preach the message of the kingdom of God, i.e. there is one God, He has a kingdom, His kingdom is coming to the earth, His king [the Messiah] will rule over His kingdom, there will be no end to His kingdom. See http://www.tzemach.org/articles/gospel.htm In our age the church has defined the message of the kingdom to be the message of reconciliation. Although reconciliation is a valid message, and I certainly needed it, it is not the message of the kingdom of God, and often the church's message gets in the way of the true message of the kingdom. When Pastor Ken speaks on this topic he sometimes points out the unwritten parable of the church, 'there was a great sea filled with people who were drowning, and a man came a threw them a life preserver, and those that grabbed on were saved, but those who would not perished.' That parable is what is being taught by most churches, but it simply is not in the bible. Please look for yourself, there is no place that states that a person must accept Jesus or go to hell. The most common references are:
1) John 14:6 "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
None of them make a statement about final judgment. When Jesus spoke concerning final judgment, He made it clear that it was about final judgment. If these verses are talking about final judgment they stand contrary to:
2) Acts 4:12 "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."
3) John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
Exodus 32:32-33 "But now, if You will, forgive their sin, and if not please blot me out from Your book which You have written!" The Lord said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book."
Ezekiel 18 "Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die. But if a man is righteous and practices justice and righteousness, and does not eat at the mountain shrines or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, or defile his neighbor's wife or approach a woman during her menstrual period; if a man does not oppress anyone, but restores to the debtor his pledge, does not commit robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing, if he does not lend money on interest or take increase, if he keeps his hand from iniquity and executes true justice between man and man, if he walks in My statutes and My ordinances so as to deal faithfully; he is righteous and will surely live," declares the Lord God. Then he may have a violent son who sheds blood and who does any of these things to a brother (though he himself did not do any of these things), that is, he even eats at the mountain shrines, and defiles his neighbor's wife, oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, does not restore a pledge, but lifts up his eyes to the idols and commits abomination, he lends money on interest and takes increase; will he live? He will not live! He has committed all these abominations, he will surely be put to death; his blood will be on his own head. "Now behold, he has a son who has observed all his father's sins which he committed, and observing does not do likewise. "He does not eat at the mountain shrines or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, or defile his neighbor's wife, or oppress anyone, or retain a pledge, or commit robbery, but he gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing, he keeps his hand from iniquity, does not take interest or increase, but executes My ordinances, and walks in My statutes; he will not die for his father's iniquity, he will surely live. "As for his father, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was not good among his people, behold, he will die for his iniquity." Yet you say, 'Why should the son not bear the punishment for the father's iniquity?' When the son has practiced justice and righteousness and has observed all My statutes and done them, he shall surely live. "The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father's iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son's iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself. "But if the wicked man turns from all his sins which he has committed and observes all My statutes and practices justice and righteousness, he shall surely live; he shall not die. All his transgressions which he has committed will not be remembered against him; because of his righteousness which he has practiced, he will live. "Do I have any pleasure in the death of the wicked," declares the Lord God, is it not rather than that he should turn from his ways and live? "But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity and does according to all the abominations that a wicked man does, will he live? All his righteous deeds which he has done will not be remembered for his treachery which he has committed and his sin which he has committed; for them he will die. "Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord is not right.' Hear now, O house of Israel! Is My way not right? Is it not your ways that are not right? "When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity and dies because of it, for his iniquity which he has committed he will die. "Again, when a wicked man turns away from his wickedness which he has committed and practices justice and righteousness, he will save his life. "Because he considered and turned away from all his transgressions which he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. "But the house of Israel says, 'The way of the Lord is not right.' Are My ways not right, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not right? "Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each according to his conduct," declares the Lord God. "Repent and turn away from all your transgressions, so that iniquity may not become a stumbling block to you. "Cast away from you all your transgressions which you have committed and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! For why will you die, O house of Israel? "For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies," declares the Lord God. "Therefore, repent and live."
John 5:29 "and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment."
Romans 1:18-32 "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and reptiles crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed unto the ages forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is against nature, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing the shameless acts and receiving in themselves the due penalty of their error. And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, hateful to God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
Revelation 21:8 "But for the cowardly and [untrustworthy] unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."
...and there are many, many more that say the same thing.
The biblical standard for judgment is not what one confesses, but rather what God has revealed to a person and what they have done with that measure of revelation. The blood of Jesus is available to "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord [which doesn't have to just be the name Jesus), [they] will be saved." Acts 2:21
I personally believe that Abraham was redeemed by the same blood through which we have received our redemption since he was faithful to the revelation he received and confessed "God will provide Himself the lamb" [a faith statement that whatever was needed for Abrahams redemption, God would provide it].
The error in doctrine began early in church history as "apologists" attempted to displace Israel with the church. The first time anything close to the modern day doctrinal postiion on this issue was expressed was somewhere around 180 CE where a church father wrote 'If the church is not your mother, then God is not your father. There is no redemption outside of the church' [my paraphrase]. Pastor Ken Garrison has documented the history of this doctrinal belief in his book "Hebraic Roots" which is a free download from our site. See http://www.tzemach.org/book.htm

Please consider these issues deeply. I met with pastor Ken weekly for about five months as we argued this topic from every concievable angle. Even then it was years before I was clear enough on this topic to confess it with confidence. These respected preachers have surely done likewise. No one abandons what they were taught growing up, without finding the treasure in the field.
I am sure that this has not cleared it all up for you since it is a very complex and delicate issue that just cannot be expressed in a rather lengthy email. Please feel free to continue to correspond with me if you like.
