Expansion in Yesha:
The official orders to expand the "jurisdiction area" came this week for four Yesha communities. The new defense minister, Amir Peretz, approved the expansion even though it was processed through former defense minister Sha'ul Mofaz's tenure. The following communities were granted the expansions: Maskiyot, Oranit, Givat Ze'ev, and Beitar Illit. Their locations range from the Jordan Valley, the Samarian Mountains, Jerusalem suburbs, and the area near Gush Etzion [respectively]. Yarir Oppenheimer, head of the peace now group called this move an attempt to steal more "Palestinian" land.
2500 New Immigrants Arriving This Summer:
Around 2,500 new immigrants from North America and France will make "Aliyah" to Israel on multiple El Al flights this summer. Six of the flights will take off from New York and Toronto between July and September. Two additional flights will arrive from Paris and Marseilles in July. The flights will be jointly sponsored by the Jewish Agency, the French organization Ami [Friends] and the North American group Nefesh B'Nefesh [Soul of the Soul]. Last year over 2,700 new citizens immigrated and another 300 returning Israelis arrived from North America. Immigration from North America, which has been steadily increasing for the past three years, is expected to reach 3,500 people this year, with as many again arriving from France.
El Al airplanes diverted to Zurich:
All El Al planes headed to Geneva, Switzerland this past week were diverted to Zurich, Switzerland, since the Swiss intelligence agency uncovered a plan to shoot down an El Al plane with a RPG missile. The plan was uncovered over five months ago by an undercover agent inside the Islamic Center in Geneva. It is important to note that there have been attempts like this one in the past using shoulder launching devices to shoot down El Al planes. Many El Al aircraft are equipped with Flightguard, which is designed to create another heat source, thus interfering with the missile en route.
Prime Minister Olmert to meet with President Bush:
Prime Minister Olmert is scheduled to meet with President Bush on Tuesday, May 23. It is suggested that his primary reason is to ask for political and monetary support from the U.S. for a massive withdrawal plan of most of the Yesha communities of Judea and Samaria. There are many grass root organizations calling on citizens to mail, call, fax, and e-mail the White House and request President Bush to not cooperate with such a request. U.S. citizens are urged to call the White House at 202-456-1111; you will be asked your state of domicile [what state you live in]. Faxes can be sent to 202-456-2461, and emails can be sent to Comments@whitehouse.gov and/or vice_president@whitehouse.gov. Please utilize wisdom and discretion while encouraging our leaders to make righteous decisions.
