Election Votes Counted:
With a very poor voter turn out the 17th Knesset [governing assembly] has been elected and Kadima showed the most seats, winning [but not really winning] by only 28 seats. Likud [conservative party] had a poor showing receiving only 12, leaving them tied for third largest party. With no one party showing a huge majority, a narrow government of many small parties will be very unstable. The Likud party is set up to be the major opposition party but will need to be voted in by many parties again. With such a fragmented government, it is possible to have a very unmovable government. Coalition talks are in the works and should be set up by the 17th of April.
Editor's note: How awkward for Israel to be left with basically no leadership at all, at such a time when strong leadership is vitally important. The Iranian nuclear threat looms heavily. It seems evident that the Israelis no longer have any confidence in government, which may well be Ariel Sharon's tragic legacy, that he undermined his own position to the extent that he destroyed Israeli faith in their government, and that might just be the plan of G-d.
Sbarro Terrorist Sentenced:
Ahlam Tamimi was the person who drove the Sbarro terrorist to his final destination back in 2001. She was sentenced this week to sixteen life terms in jail for her involvement in the attack. Tamimi belongs to the terrorist organization Hamas, who recently came to power in the "Palestinian" Authority. Tamimi is now at the Hasharon Prison with one hundred six other female prisoners belonging to Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Fatah, and other terrorist groups. Back in 2001 she said she was not sorry for what she did, because "Palestine" will become free from the occupation and then she will be freed from prison. Justice has been served.
Hamas Sworn Into Office:
Twenty-four cabinet members of Hamas were sworn in this week as Hamas officially takes control of the "Palestinian" parliament. Many countries have stated that the economical aid will now stop since Hamas has not recognized Israel’s right to exist. Canada has officially stopped all current aid. Hamas states that the "Palestinians" have the right to resist Israel, and if Israel unilaterally sets up borders, they would revert to armed resistance. Hopefully Hamas faces a rough road ahead with an international boycott of aid. Many Arab counties have been petitioned for assistance.
Israel Defense Force Has New Chief Rabbi:
Rabbi Avi Ronsky was approved to become the IDF's new chief rabbi later this summer. He will receive the rank of LT. Colonel. Rabbi Ronsky, 54 lives is in the community of Itamar in Samaria. Although he was adamantly against soldiers refusing orders during the explosion of Jews from there home this past summer. The group Shalom Achshav [Peace Now] says that such an appointment "of extremist settler like Rabbi Ronsky who lives in an illegal outpost is a slap in the face at the rule of law."
