Sexuality and Perversion:
The Bible and Contemporary Lifestyle

In the initial creation, God specified the three most basic drives in man: eating, reproducing and exerting dominance in his environment (Genesis 1:27-29). God specified how each was to be pursued. Today we see that in fallen man, under Satanic influence, each of these areas has been perverted. No area has been more perverted than reproduction.

God saw that it was not good for man to be alone so He made him a helper suitable for him (Genesis 2:18). God then initiated the first marriage and said, ". . . a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24b). It was through this union in marriage, then, that man would be fruitful and multiply. We conclude from these Scriptures that the purpose of sexuality is intimacy and reproduction and that this is only properly experienced in the covenant of marriage.

It is obvious that there is no end to the downward spiral of perversion.

Satan has grossly perverted the concept and manifestation of human sexuality on our day. We read of such perversion from the earliest times (see account of Sodom and Gomorrah, Genesis 19); however, the uniqueness of our day lies in the fact that such perversion is commonplace. The leaders of our society openly and shamelessly embrace such lifestyles. Young people today rarely "get married" before experimenting sexually, usually with a host of partners. Years ago, young people dated, went "steady", became engaged and then were married. Today young people simply move in with one another. Perhaps, if they find themselves compatible and if there is a tax advantage to be gained, they get married later. The even more perverted practice of homosexuality is almost as common today. Same-sex partnerships are common today. Such partnerships are practiced in the highest offices of the land. Indeed, the current administration appears to be more committed to the homosexual agenda than in any other single issue. The actual practices of homosexuals are so gross that they cannot be described here. It is obvious that there is no end to the downward spiral of perversion. As long as people are enslaved to sexual sensations, there will always be experimentation into more exotic and sensual expressions.

Lessons From Nature

Perversion is so commonplace and widely practiced today that it is difficult to find confirmation of Biblical patterns for sexuality in our contemporary society. Indeed, we will appeal to nature to find this confirmation. Even though there are limits to the conclusions that may be drawn from nature, some very interesting observations are readily apparent. We will consider the higher mammals, those who biologists tell us are most near the human species.

One observation immediately obvious is that sex is practiced only for reproduction and for no other purpose. There is no such thing as "recreational sex". This is true because the female of the species totally and absolutely controls any sexual encounter. The female will only permit sexual activity for the brief period when she can become pregnant. We say that she is responding to "instinct". "Instinct" is a convenient classification used by biologists for activities in which animals most likely respond directly to God. Of course most biologists practice the religion of Secular Humanism which embraces evolution and, therefore, would not use such language.

Another observation that is readily observable is that there is no perversion practiced in the animal kingdom outside the human species. Ten percent of male dogs in a litter are not born, nor do they become, homosexual. Every last one of them is heterosexual, every time.

Now we should be able to deduce some simple lessons from this brief study of nature. If we conclude that humans are closely related biologically to the higher mammals, the essential reason for sexual activity should be reproduction. In addition, we should expect no perversion. When we witness something radically different from these expectations, we must conclude that there is gross perversion practiced in the human species.

Torah and Intelligent Observance

God gave us Torah to help us overcome the consequence of the "Fall".

We concluded that sexual activity in the higher mammals was initiated because of "instinct". We believe that this describes nature under the direct Lordship of God. Now in the human species, we understand that this natural communication with God was lost in the "Fall". So what has God given to us to help us overcome the consequence of the "Fall"? He gave us the Torah (the teaching of His Way). He also gave us intelligence and the will to make intelligent decisions in accordance with Torah. In the Torah, God clearly specifies righteous sexual activity. Sexual activity should be for reproduction ("Be fruitful and multiply!") and there should be no sexual activity outside of the marriage covenant, whatsoever. In addition, no perversion should be practiced. Sexual activity outside of marriage as well as homosexuality and all of its many strange manifestations in sin. The consequence of sin is death in one form or another.

Conclusions

Perversion has become so commonplace today that the Biblical pattern of life is openly rejected throughout society and to the highest offices of this land. Scientific research which should be speaking objectively concerning this subject has been totally compromised by sin. There is hardly a secular voice that has not embraced such lifestyles. The situation is so bad that we must appeal to nature to get a basic idea of how the human was supposed to function in the first place. This is a strange situation since man was originally created to be the teacher and shepherd of the animal kingdom.

As believers today we must take a firm stand in Biblical righteousness. If we compromise, we lose our testimony. We become like salt that has become tasteless (Matthew 5:13). Furthermore, compromise brings us down into a never-ending spiral of perversion that leads to total destruction.

God redeemed you in order for you to be a testimony against this perverse generation. Peter said, "For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts" (1 Peter 4:3a). Therefore, live for the glory of God and become fruitful in His purpose today.
