In its relentless quest to convert mankind, the Church has forsaken the God-given command and honor of training and making disciples. This it has done, and continues to do, to its own detriment. It is a sad testimony to consider that the Church has continually overlooked the many prophecies given by Jesus and the prophets in the Scriptures concerning mankind's final state at the end of this age. Let us consider some of these prophecies.
Jesus said, "And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold" (Matthew 24:12 [KJV]). He was referring explicitly to the end of this age. Again Jesus expounded, "For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, they were marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark" (Matthew 24:37-38). And finally, let us consider what the Lord spoke through Zechariah: "And it will come about in that day that I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it will be gathered against it" (Zechariah 12:3). Note the Lord said all the nations!
I labored at this point so that you may clearly see and understand that Christendom, despite its efforts, will never cause mankind to come to terms with God. God Himself will do so. Therefore, considering this fact, it is beneficial for the Church to carefully make well-equipped disciples of those that God draws to Himself in Messiah Jesus by the Holy Spirit. It stands to reason that the believer who desires in their heart to serve God and seek His purpose should be in one of two postures: either being discipled or making disciples. Paul wrote to Timothy, "And the things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also" (2 Timothy 2:2). Note, Paul recognized the significance of making disciples.
Despite all the basis in Scripture for making trained disciples, one might still ask, "Why is it so important for us to make disciples?" Over and over again we see in Scripture warnings concerning various deceptions which will occur at the end of this age. Jesus said, "For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect" (Matthew 24:24). Therefore, it is for good reason that the Lord would say, "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; therefore be shrewd as serpents, and innocent as doves" (Matthew 10:16). As we consider Christendom today, we find an array of advent movements and cultic organizations. Each is well able to present ample evidence as to why their way is the true way. These movements and organizations have, and continue to, lead great numbers of believers astray. Indeed it is not only important, but it is essential that we should strive to make well-equipped disciples who would be able to discern lies and deceptions when faced with them. Paul made reference to this when he stated, "Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: Whereunto I also labour, striving according to His working, which worketh in me mightily" (Colossians 1:28-29 [KJV]). We must know God in Spirit and in truth.
As we have seen, it is crucial that we study. Paul said, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15 [KJV]). It is also important for us to know that no amount of studying can enhance our position relative to God. Our position with the Lord has been established at the foot of the cross where we met Him. Studying and being built up in the word is for the purpose of becoming more effective in ministry and in God's purpose, to be faithful with our talents so that we may glorify our God and Savior.
A kingdom must have subjects who are well-prepared and willing to serve the king in order for that kingdom to stand. And so it is with the Kingdom of God.
